Bitcoin’s Structural Weakness: No Reversal Yet, But the Signals Are Stacking

Gaming | CryptoPanda |

Bitcoin’s adjusted spent output profit ratio (aSOPR) has been locked below 1.0 for the past 72 consecutive trading hours. This means every coin moved on-chain is being sold at a loss, on average. The last time this sustained a stretch of underwater movement without a snap reversal was during the COVID crash of March 2020. Back then, capitulation preceded a 500% bull run. Today, the market is older, wider, and more institutional. But the pattern?

Still the same.

I’ve been on the desk through three cycles. The current price action is not a panic sell-off. It’s a slow bleed driven by dispossessed miners, exhausted short-term speculators, and a long-term holder base that has not broken yet. Let’s map the real structure.

The first barrier is the $75,000 mark on the weekly chart. That is the 21-week moving average. Every rally in the past two months has been rejected there. Above that, $82,000—the 50-week MA—represents the line between a recovery and a full-blown trend change. Multiple analysts I track—including Ted Pillows and Ali Martinez, though they rarely agree—both cite these two levels as the pivot for the next 90 days. Verified via my editorial team’s cross-referencing of six independent charting sources.

Now drill into the on-chain triad. These three metrics must all flip for a confirmed reversal:

aSOPR must cross above 1.0 and hold. Currently at 0.94. That indicates continued loss realization. Until sellers can’t supply cheap coins, price will not sustain upward pressure.

Puell Multiple sits at 0.28. This measures miner revenue in USD relative to its 365-day average. Historical floor zones are around 0.2 to 0.3. We are in that zone. Miner stress is real. During the 2022 bear market, my team and I watched Puell crawl along 0.3 for weeks before capitulation gave way to compression. We are in that same compression now.

Reserve Risk Multiple reads below 1. It measures long-term holder conviction. Specifically, it weighs the opportunity cost of holding coins versus selling them. Below 1 means the incentive to hold is thinning. But it has not collapsed. That for me is the most telling signal: long holders are not rushing for the exit. This is not 2022’s panic. It is a grinding test of patience.

This is the core insight: we have a bear market without a panic. That is structurally different from previous cycles. The market is pricing in a slow recovery—or further deterioration—without the catharsis of a single washout day.

The contrarian angle is this: everyone is watching these metrics. The wait for aSOPR to flip has become its own narrative. In crypto, when the crowd is watching the same on-chain dashboard, the reversal often comes when the metrics flicker but the crowd hesitates to act. I’ve seen this pattern firsthand during the 2018 bottom when I published a pre-sale audit that identified a distribution flaw. The market ignored it until the data was indisputable. Then it moved too fast.

Ted Pillows argued this week that crypto will outperform the S&P 500 in the coming months. He’s not saying crypto goes up. He’s saying the S&P may fall further, and crypto—specifically Bitcoin—will bleed slower. That is a relative call, not an absolute one. It tells you how low conviction is in macro. The hidden risk is a cascade: if equities break down, Bitcoin could lose its correlation and drop outright, invalidating the “outperformance” thesis.

Ali Martinez outlined three conditions for a bullish reversal: aSOPR breaking 1.0, Puell returning above 0.5, and Reserve Risk recovering above its 10-day average. None are met. His framework is clean, but it assumes orderly confirmation. What if the reversal comes on a sudden influx of spot ETF volume that drags aSOPR above 1.0 in a single day? That would catch many shorts off guard. The data is the map, but the terrain can shift without warning.

From my newsroom, we are tracking one additional signal: the funding rate across Bitcoin perpetuals remains close to neutral. No cascading liquidations waiting. That means any move up or down will be driven by spot demand—not leverage. That is healthier but slower. Structural analysis from the desk: this market is not ready for a breakout until either a macro catalyst—like a Fed pivot or a regulatory clarity breakthrough—or until these three on-chain metrics cross their thresholds simultaneously.

The takeaway is not a call to buy or sell. It is a call to watch the correct dials. If aSOPR ticks above 1.0 within the next two weeks while Puell stabilizes above 0.3, that is your early entry window. If Reserve Risk starts climbing and price fails to break $75,000, that is a bear trap. I am not forecasting. I am providing the checklist.

History says the longest compressions produce the most violent expansions. This cycle’s compression has been unusually long. I don’t know when the expansion triggers. But I know what to watch. The data is not bullish yet. It is also not catastrophic. It is waiting. The question is: are you?
